Disclosure: Communicating with Patients about Unanticipated Outcomes
The intent of this activity is to improve the participants competence in communicating with patients after an unanticipated or adverse outcome has occurred. Physicians are not routinely trained in communication skills, especially after an adverse event. Studies have shown that patients want clear, effective communication after unanticipated outcomes, and this improves the patient/provider relationship, as well as trust. All practitioners who practice at AHC facilities will benefit from this course. At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to: Define the terminology used for communication and disclosure; Understand why communication and disclosure are issues today; Describe barriers to open communication and disclosure of adverse outcomes; Learn the 'nuts and bolts' of disclosing an unanticipated outcome; Introduce resources for caregiver support after an adverse event.
