Aurora Women's Pavilion Birthing Center

Perinatal Assessment Center | Newborn Intensive Care Unit | Genetic Counseling

Genetics counseling

Never before in time have women had more choice about when to have a baby. Instead of having their babies in their 20's, more and more women are choosing to wait until their 30's, or even 40's, to have children. While this freedom has been empowering to women, it also carries some risks. These include an increased risk of multiple gestation, placenta previa, cesarean section and genetic abnormalities, such as Down Syndrome.

Most women over age 35 have healthy babies, but because of the increased risk for chromosomal abnormalities, genetic counseling and testing may provide greater peace-of-mind.

Genetic ultrasound is an effective tool in identifying subtle variations or “markers” associated with Down Syndrome and other genetic disorders. If no markers are detected during a genetic ultrasound, a woman's risk can be reduced to that of a younger woman, and she can feel reassured about the need for future genetic testing.

When an ultrasound shows a birth defect or multiple concerning markers, it can indicate that a woman's chance to have a baby with a chromosome abnormality may be increased. In this situation, it is helpful for a couple to consult with a genetic counselor. These caring professionals help families understand what is known about the causes of the birth defect and explain additional testing that is available to them. They can also arrange for referrals to medical experts as well as appropriate support groups.
