Cancer Genetics Counseling Program

Care coordinator | High risk | Mammography/imaging | Emotional health | Breast cancer

Knowledge is a valuable tool in dealing with cancer. Although most cancer is not inherited and happens by chance, approximately 5-10% of all cancers are due to a hereditary factor, which means it can be passed from generation to generation. The good news is that the 2 genes that account for the majority of hereditary breast cancer have been identified, giving you access to the valuable information needed to plan preventive care that addresses your risks.

At the Aurora Women's Pavilion, the Cancer Genetics Counseling Program assists you in determining your personalized risk assessment based on your family and personal history of cancer. Our program offers you:

  • Confidential hereditary cancer risk assessment
  • Access to on-going local and national cancer research studies
  • Education for patients, health care professionals and the community
  • Genetic testing and DNA banking when appropriate

Completing a risk assessment will educate you about the difference between hereditary and sporadic cancers, will give you valuable information you and your doctors can use to plan your preventive care and can assist you with decisions regarding whether genetic testing would be of importance to you.

After you complete the risk assessment, an appointment will be scheduled for you with the genetics counselor. At this appointment you will discuss:

  • Basic cancer and genetic concepts
  • Your family and personal history of cancer and other illnesses
  • Your personalized hereditary cancer risk assessment
  • Genetic testing options
  • The possibility of scheduling genetic testing if appropriate
  • Your concerns over genetic testing and insurance discrimination

It is our policy that the release of genetic test results to physicians, insurance companies or other health care providers will only be granted upon receiving your written request.

If you feel cancer genetic counseling is important to your plan of preventive care, talk with your doctor about a referral for cancer genetics assessment or contact our genetic counselor Jennifer Geurts at genetic.counseling@aurora.org or call the genetic counseling program office at 414-649-5639.
