Breast cancer
Being high-risk does not mean you actually have cancer. Discovering a
risk simply means you have the valuable knowledge to do something about it
before it becomes a medical concern. Our High-Risk Clinic can help you
assess which procedures are most appropriate for your personal situation.
Options include:
Ductal lavage
The majority of breast cancers begin in the milk ducts. In this advanced
procedure, a breast surgeon takes a sampling of cells from inside the milk
ducts and has them analyzed for abnormalities that may indicate a risk for
developing breast cancer.
Ductoscopy
When atypical cells have been detected from samplings of a ductal lavage or
from abnormal nipple discharge, a very small video scope is inserted to look
inside the breast duct. If an abnormality is confirmed, the duct can be
surgically removed.
Genetic testing
While it is not common, some cancers can be linked to hereditary factors. If
you have a strong family history of certain cancers, you too could be at
risk. The Aurora Women's Pavilion offers a Cancer Genetics Counseling
Program to help you better understand how your family's medical history
might impact your health today and in the future.
