Lymphedema therapy

Following breast surgery, a condition called lymphedema may occur. Triggered by the removal or radiation of lymph vessels or nodes, body parts, most often an arm or leg, begin to swell. The condition may happen immediately following surgery, or many years later.

Lymphedema causes tissues to become swollen, thick and painful and increases the risk for infection which can lead to more complicated medical conditions. With proper evaluation and intervention, it can be treated and controlled so as not to interfere with the quality of a woman's life.

To fully understand the extent of a women's condition, we conduct a thorough evaluation including:

  • Past medical history evaluation
  • Assess previous scars
  • Strength testing
  • Range of motion testing
  • Pain level assessment
  • Sensation level assessment of affected area
  • Circumferential measurement of affected area
  • Skin integrity assessment, looking at the color, texture, firmness, temperature and moisture
  • Functional mobility assessment including the ability to stand up and walk
  • Determination of the condition's impact on daily activities of living

There are things we can do to help. Based on the information from your personalized assessment, a treatment plan is developed which may include any of the following:

  • Manual Lymph Drainage - A gentle massage that stimulates the lymphatic system to decrease swelling
  • Medical Compression Bandaging - Facilitates lymph flow and assists in maintaining positive effects of the manual lymph drainage between treatment sessions
  • Sequential Pumping - Used as needed to assist in lymph drainage in combination with Manual Lymph Drainage and medical compression bandaging
  • Client Education - In areas of skin care, self massage, exercise and precautions to assist in making positive lifestyle choices
  • A personalized exercise program to assist in improving range of motion, strength and ability to perform everyday activities
