Complementary medicine

Massage

Acupuncture | Yoga | Massage | Craniosacral therapy | Meditation | Tai Chi | Aromatherapy

While massage was once thought of as a luxury or special treat, it has become widely regarded as an effective tool to improve a person's health and well-being. Massage therapy helps improve circulation, relieve muscle tension, stimulates the immune system, calms the mind, reduces anxiety levels and enhances self-image among many other benefits.

At the Complementary/Integrative Medicine Center, you have access to certified massage therapists trained in most massage techniques. To be certified, therapists must complete a course of training from a school of bodywork, which generally means 100 – 1000 hours of training. Some practitioners may have taken a national certification exam.

We offer massage to meet all the unique needs of our patients. Prenatal massage is provided to help relieve stress and aches associated with pregnancy. Infant and child massage brings a calming touch through gentle gliding strokes. Done by a parent it not only helps the health of the child, but also improves the child/parent bond. We also offer clinical massage for cancer patients.

There are several massage techniques that therapists can utilize to best treat your condition or goals. Some common techniques include:

  • Swedish massage – uses a system of long gliding strokes, kneading and friction on the top layers of muscle to promote relaxation.
  • Shiatsu massage – uses applied pressure of the thumbs and gentle stretches.
  • Reflexology – uses firm pressure on specific points in the hands and feet.
  • Lymphatic massage – uses light-pressured movements directed towards the heart and lymphatic ducts; directs the lymphatic flow throughout the body. It is sometimes use for edema (swelling).
  • Neuromuscular therapy – applies finger pressure to “trigger points” (painful, irritated areas in muscle) in order to break the cycle of spasm or pain.
