Complementary medicine

Mindfulness-based stress reduction

Acupuncture | Yoga | Massage | Craniosacral therapy | Meditation | Tai Chi | Aromatherapy

Living in the present moment
Quieting the mind and body
Regarding ourselves with patience and kindness

These are just a few of the basic premises of the practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness, the practice of being in the present moment with full attention and awareness, is proven to help women reduce stress. Research shows that it helps reduce both physical and psychological symptoms.

At the Complementary/Integrative Medicine Center you can learn how to use mindfulness-based stress reduction in your everyday life. Whether you are experiencing disease or other medical conditions as a result of stress or just want to refocus your life and the busyness of each day, learning mindfulness tools can help you.

The practice of mindfulness as a form of stress reduction has shown to help with the following conditions:

  • Excessive stress
  • Anxiety, panic
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Depression
  • Headaches
  • Chronic pain or illness
  • Life threatening illness
  • Cancer Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Intestinal problems
  • Grief

Learn mindfulness-based stress reduction

We offer an 8-week course during which women learn mindfulness practices including meditation, gentle yoga, mindful movement and body scan. The goal is to help you access your inner stability and strength, assisting you to take better care of yourself.

The total cost of the 8-week series is $295 and includes an introductory interview, course materials including audio tapes for home practice, and 26-30 hours of direct classroom instruction including:

  • Eight 2–hour weekly classes
  • One 7–hour weekend day retreat
  • One 2–hour follow-up class held 1-2 months after completion of program

During the 8 weeks we ask that you make a daily commitment to reserve at least 30 minutes of time for yourself to be quiet, relaxed, self-observant and free of other obligations.

After completing the course, participants share that they now experience enhanced appreciation of life, less tension and an easier time with making healthy life choices. They have also reported improvement in symptom, ability to cope more effectively with pain and increased energy and enthusiasm.

The mindfulness-based stress reduction program is a complement to your current medical care, not to replace it. To learn more about this unique course and upcoming dates and locations, call Aurora Complementary Medicine at 414-328-7524.
