Biofeedback/Neuromuscular re-education

Meet the lead physician | Meet our biofeedback team

Sometimes in medicine, you have the power to heal yourself. The expert occupational therapy staff at the Aurora Women's Pavilion empowers women by helping them better understand their body and what they can do to feel more in control of their bodily functions through the use of Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation.

Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation is a method of treating bowel, bladder and pelvic floor problems through physical rehabilitation and patient education. Often referred to as biofeedback, it offers you an alternative to surgery or medication, and puts you in control with the ability to better manage:

  • Leakage of urine and stool with coughing, sneezing, lifting, urgency or without awareness
  • Bowel or bladder urgency and/or frequency
  • Problems emptying the bladder
  • Straining or problems emptying the bowels
  • Pelvic muscle weakness or prolapse
  • Pelvic pain

The program usually consists of 8 sessions which include:

  • Comprehensive consultation to discuss your specific and personal problem or symptoms
  • Education regarding:
    • your anatomy
    • the physiology of the bowel, bladder and pelvic floor muscles
    • the role of diet and fluids in bowel and bladder control
    • urge suppression strategies
    • scheduled voids or evacuation
    • skin care and protective garments
  • Pelvic floor muscle assessment and training using biofeedback to optimize the function of the pelvic floor muscles for bowel, bladder and pain control
  • Instruction in a pelvic floor muscle home exercise program
  • Manual therapy techniques to reduce soft tissue restrictions that may be contributing to the problem
  • Education in methods to reduce or manage symptoms

On average, women who complete the full program reduce their symptoms by 70%. Neuromuscular re-education is available by physician referral. For a consultation regarding whether you could be a candidate for Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation, click here or call 414-329-5658.
