Although most cancer is not inherited and happens by chance, approximately 5-10% of all cancers are due to a hereditary factor, which means it can be passed from generation to generation. The good news is that a hereditary predisposition to colorectal cancers can be identified – giving you access to the valuable information needed to plan preventive care that addresses your risks. If you are at risk, a more frequent schedule of colonoscopies may actually remove threatening pre-cancerous polyps before they become a problem. Being high risk does not mean you actually have cancer. Discovering a risk simply means you have the valuable knowledge to do something about it before it becomes a medical concern. If you have a strong family history of certain cancers, you too could be at risk.
