Testimonials from our 2008 program participants

Participant: I had a back fusion 2 years ago and then a broken ankle last year. Even with physical therapy, I had a hard time with walking. The exercise and especially, Anthony, helped me a lot. I can now walk a mile. I quit one pain medication already. I can sleep all night without pain. I have a lot less pain. I hope to continue with the exercise and to get strong and to quit some other medications.

Participant: Ever since I began the wellness program back in July 2007, I have a different attitude about eating and living a healthier life. In the past, I would start a diet and as soon as I would slip up I would quit. I really believe that your support and the information and constant encouragement t o keep a journal are what keeps me trying. I know I don’t always eat right and keeping a journal is a struggle, but I keep working at it. I have a much better self image because I have learned ways to manage eating out, getting exercise and I have learned so much about good nutrition, just to name a few. Having a dietician talk to us and someone to talk to about exercising really encouraged me. My blood sugars, A1c and cholesterol readings are proof that this works. And one of the best things is that while I have struggled with weight all 39 years of my marriage, this is the first program that my husband was willing to try with me. It is so much nicer when he and I are on the same page.

Participant: My waist is 43.5 inches. The program has been very helpful and supportive. It helped to jump-start my journey to better health habits and personal health awareness. The weekly meetings kept me accountable. I appreciated the speakers who have insight on various topics of nutrition, diet, exercise, psychological well-being, etc. The partnership with WAC was a positive. The exercise and dietary pieces were extremely helpful. I think we have to understand that this is not a temporary diet and health fix, but a lifestyle change that will hopefully bring about better lifestyle practices. I am very satisfied with the program and appreciate all of the effort Jeanne and those who have helped to coordinate this program.

Testimonials from our 2007 program participants

Participant:  Don't join expecting to be put on a "diet." Join to learn how to make dramatic changes to improve your lifestyle. Between the Living Well Program and the Heart Watch Program, as well as the Wisconsin Athletic Club, they go above and beyond! My sincerest thanks to Jeanne, Barb, Julia, Nick, Katie and Anthony!

Participant:  I'm so glad that I took advantage of the Living Well program. I've learned how to change my eating habits and that taking time to exercise is so important when trying to lose weight. My energy has returned and I can eat lots of good, healthy foods while still losing weight. Jeanne has been a great coach. Amy has taught me a lot about nutrition and Anthony set me up with great exercises. The staff at the WAC in West Allis are all friendly and very supportive. Thanks for this opportunity!

Participant:  The Living Well program provided the tools that helped me take an active role in improving my health. The team of specialists (exercise specialist, dietician and coordinator coach) supported, encouraged and taught me that I can achieve my goals to be active and healthy. I want to thank you!

Participant:  I enjoyed the Living Well program, especially the visits with the dietician for the WAC. She gave some great insights on healthy eating plus I have incorporated into my diet many of the healthy foods she brought for us to sample. I feel I am healthier now than I was three months ago due to the diet and exercise habits I have developed with this program!

Participant:  The program gave me the incentive to not only lose weight but to learn to live a better, healthier lifestyle. I did not realize how much fat and calories were in certain foods until I had to look them up! I learned some new habits of healthy snacking and eating throughout the day to curb my hunger and to be able to have better portion control. Exercise and being active is a very important part to losing weight. It was fun doing it for the health of it!  I enjoyed Jeanne, Katie and Anthony.  They are great coaches and cheerleaders!

Participant:  I believe that I have found a weight loss program that will work for me. Much of the criteria appeals to me. I couldn't pick a favorite part because so many offerings were my favorites. In no specific order I have listed my favorites:

  • The very first meeting at the WAC in West Allis was great because the program was explained and there was not a focus on the weight. The focus was becoming healthy.
  • Eating food that is cooked at home. Other weight loss programs encouraged use of special food which did not appeal to me.
  • Really liked having the ‘Calorie Fat and Carbohydrate Counter' book. I love this book! Some of the foods I was eating, I had no idea how high in fat and calories the food was and this wonderful little book explains so much!
  • Working with Katie was superb. She gave me much information.  She is extremely knowledgeable in the field of food and good health.
  • I am so thankful for the WAC membership. I never would have walked in off the street to join! I will be joining now. I plan to continue going to the WAC 3 times a week. At the WAC in Waukesha, the lovely lady working with me (Jeni) is great (we graduated from Carrol College in the same program. What a surprise to walk in and see her for the first time since college.).
  • The people that I have come to the meetings and given me input regarding exercise and good nutrition.
  • It was very helpful to have the 3-ring binder so I could enter what I eat and the amount of exercise. I am a visual learner, and I need to see. I appreciate the handouts given at each class!
  • I did not lose the amount of weight I wanted. For that I was disappointed but I know what I have to do to reach that goal.
  • I have to work on portion control. I believe it would be in my best interest to do one-on-one with a dietician. I need to become more creative in preparing the food I eat.
  • I would like to take a class or two at the WAC. I need to work out scheduling so I can take advantage of the offerings at the WAC.

Participant:  Since joining Aurora's Wellness Plan (Phase I), I have lost 15 pounds and 6% of my body fat! I feel great and have more energy than I have had for many years. I believe a big part of my success is that the plan encompasses all the major factors of losing weight and keeping it off. I've made lifestyle changes that seem to be sticking and have become a habit (i.e., incorporating exercise into a busy schedule that I could never have had time to do before.). I'm looking forward to continuing in the program for the remainder of the duration and reaching my personal weight goal.

Participant verbally relaying a testimonial to coordinator:  The Living Well program works so well! I have tried Weight Watchers and Curves with no success! I have seen great results on this program. It's fun too!

Participant relaying a newly acquired habit to deal with stress:  I have a lot of responsibility and stress at work. I was in the habit of looking at the sales figures for the day right before I went to sleep. When the news was bad, I could not sleep (and that was usually the case). After reading an article (which was distributed at class on managing your energy and not your time), I now read the sales information when I report to work and have time to deal with issues throughout the day (from an idea given in the article). I was also in the habit of bringing sales people in my office and scolding them when things were going bad. I now take deep breaths when I'm upset and no longer scold employees (also a tip from the article). My stress has been reduced with just these couple of tips!

Participant relaying news regarding inches lost:  The program Coordinator received a phone message that a participant went in to get body composition measured and was delighted to share that she has lost 12.5 inches – in 16 weeks!
