Center for Sexual Health & Wellness

Complementary services

As medical treatment advances to new levels, it becomes more and more apparent that care needs to involve more than physically treating the body. Balancing a person's surroundings can greatly influence healing. At the Pavilion, you have access to a wide variety of complementary therapies that are designed to support and enhance the medical care you receive. From nurturing your spirit, to relaxing your mind and feeling whole in the midst of a challenging time, you can regain the sense of control and peace through a comprehensive approach to nurturing your well-being.

While some of the therapies available at the Pavilion can be found in spas and other locations, the Pavilion has developed programs that understand the unique health issues associated with your medical treatment and have adapted their approach to enhance your healing.

Massage Therapy -- Proven to be effective in reducing stress, as well as improving circulation and overall health. Clothes on massages are also available for any woman who so desires.

Acupuncture - Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is the most commonly used system of healing in the world and dates back possibly four thousand years. Yet, it is relatively new to the United States, only becoming popular in the last 30 years.

Based on a theory that one part of your body affects every other part of your body, organs and organ systems are viewed as interconnected structures that work together to keep your body functioning. The mind and body are not viewed separately, but as part of an energetic system.

Acupuncture involves the concept of qi (pronounced "chi"), which is considered a vital force or energy responsible for controlling the workings of the human mind and body. Qi flows through the body via channels, or pathways, which are called meridians. Imbalances in the flow of qi cause illness; correction of this flow restores your body to balance. Qi is believed to help regulate balance in the body. It is influenced by the opposing forces of yin and yang which represent positive and negative energy and forces in the universe and human body. Acupuncture is believed to keep the balance between yin and yang, thus allowing for the normal flow of qi throughout the body and restoring health to the mind and body.

Benefits of acupuncture may include:

  • Pain reduction
  • Increased relaxation
  • Reduced muscle tension
  • Reduced nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy

Resources such as books and moisturizing lubricants are available through the Garden of the Senses Boutique at the Aurora Women's Pavilion. Your health care provider may have other helpful suggestions which may be purchased at your visit.
