Program philosophy

We recognize the impact behavioral health problems have on children, as well as their families. Our program provides patients, ages 5-18, with a safe, supportive and therapeutic environment and is designed to address individual and family needs. We utilize a structured cognitive-behavioral model that helps children gain better insight into their actions and choices.

Our objectives are to help children and adolescents to:

  • Stabilize moods
  • Learn and practice a variety of skills in exploring and understanding emotions, feelings or choices
  • Address the needs of family through education and crisis stabilizing
  • Understand the need for medication intervention
  • Assume responsibility for personal choices, decisions and consequences to their choices
  • Transition safely back to home and school

Treatment

Our program is designed to treat children and adolescents who are experiencing a wide range of psychiatric symptoms, behavioral difficulties and diagnoses including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Eating disorders
  • Suicidal behavior
  • Self-harmful behaviors
  • Co-existing behaviors
  • Chemical dependency
  • Attention Deficit Disorder

Continuum of care

Our inpatient program is flexible and designed to meet the specific needs of each child and adolescent. We provide a comprehensive assessment and develop an individualized treatment plan with each patient and their family. Our child/adolescent program uses a number of approaches including individual, group and family therapy, as well as medication management. We also provide patient and family education and coordinate care with the schools.

Aurora Psychiatric Hospital also offers a variety of less intensive treatment options. Our partial hospital program offers intensive treatment in a structured environment with less disruption to the child's regular routine. Partial hospitalization also enables patients to reintegrate into their schools and activities following an acute episode of illness.

For adolescents who are struggling with chemical dependency problems, Aurora Psychiatric Hospital also offers a structured intensive outpatient evening program to help with recovery.

Case management

Aurora Psychiatric Hospital utilizes case managers to help patients and their families throughout treatment. Case managers are registered psychiatric nurses who are available during normal business hours. Our case managers provide an initial comprehensive assessment, coordination with schools and community resources, as well as discharge planning. The case manager is also a resource for the family, providing information to the designated guardian throughout the patient's course of treatment.

Referrals for admission or requests for information can be made by calling the Intake Services Department at (414) 454-6777.
