Aurora Psychiatric Hospital

Eating disorders programThe Eating Disorder Program at Aurora Psychiatric Hospital

Eating disorders are a silent disease, destroying the physical and mental health of millions of Americans every year. Now, Aurora Psychiatric Hospital is providing an evidenced-based approach to treating eating disorders in adolescents and adults.

The Eating Disorder Program offers several levels of care for patients ages 13 and over who are struggling with disordered eating. We offer inpatient care for stabilization as well as full day partial hospitalization which provides comprehensive programming for patients who are struggling with disordered eating patterns.

Our evening program enables our patients to continue with school, work and other family life activities while still providing intensive outpatient therapy for eating disorders. Our programs include family involvement and are designed to help patients develop the skills they need to make lifelong change. We are committed to eating disorder treatment that is evidenced-based and cost effective.

We provide comprehensive services for most eating disorders including Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa.

What makes our treatment effective?

The goal of all of our programs is to reduce and/or eliminate eating disorder symptoms within a structured setting. We use the approaches of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy provided by a multidisciplinary treatment team, to restore healthy eating habits and symptom stabilization. A number of factors make our program effective:

  • Utilizing evidence-based treatment
  • Multidisciplinary treatment and case management
  • Multilevel care for varying treatment needs
  • Building skills for lifelong change
  • Medication and nutrition monitoring and management
  • Family focused
  • Art and recreational therapy
  • Skill based

The Eating Disorder Program at Aurora Psychiatric Hospital uses a number of different approaches including individual, group, family and dietary therapy, education, medication management and movement therapy such as Yoga. Our multidisciplinary team develops individualized treatment plans to meet the needs of each patient. Members of the team include psychiatrists, psychotherapists, group therapists, family therapists, registered dietitian and registered nurses.

Programs

We offer both adolescent and adult inpatient services. Inpatients receive psychiatric consultation, medical support, dietary information and support, psychoeducation and skills training, family therapy, and art and recreational therapy. Patients keep track of their daily eating disorder urges/behaviors, nutrition consumed, and therapy skills used daily.

Our Partial Hospital Program (PHP) provides a structured outpatient environment. Patients keep track of their daily eating disorder urges/behaviors, nutrition consumed, and therapy skills used daily. In addition, meals and snacks are provided with nutritional coaching and supervision. Patients attend programming Monday through Friday

We also offer an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that provides a structured outpatient environment that includes psychoeducation and skills training, dietary information and support, and a supervised therapeutic meal each night of programming. Patients keep track of their daily eating disorder urges/behaviors, nutrition consumed, and therapy skills used daily. The IOP conveniently meets three evenings each week on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
