Your teenager may only appear to be ignoring you. According to a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (September 1997), adolescents who feel loved and cared for by their parents and are comfortable in their schools are less likely to engage in high-risk behaviors.
In interviews with over 12,000 students in grades 7 through 12, researchers found that when parents expected their children to do well in school they were less likely to smoke, abuse alcohol or drugs, have sex, or participate in violence. Adolescents whose parents expressed disapproval of their being sexually active reported delaying sexual activity. These findings held true even up to the twelfth grade and for all races and income levels and both single and two-parent families.
Don't assume your teenager knows what your values are regarding school performance,
alcohol, drugs, and sex. Talk to them! Establishing reasonable limits is perceived by adolescents as being cared about (no matter how loudly they protest).
