The Internet is a nearly limitless resource for communication, entertainment and education. But parents should keep in mind that although children may be technically “computer-savvy,” they often lack the maturity and
judgment to recognize potential dangers. Here are a few precautions to ensure your child's safety in cyberspace:
Stress the importance of never giving out personal information over the computer.
Remind children and teens that people on-line may not be who they seem.
Establish and enforce rules for using the computer, and limit your child's time on-line. Balance computer time with time spent with friends and family, on schoolwork and sports.
Keep the computer in a well-trafficked room of the house, such as the den or family room.
Remind your child to tell you immediately of any offensive or questionable material they encounter. Parents can contact the service provider for assistance.
Investigate software that allows only visits to predetermined
sites or during certain hours, or provides a report of websites your child visits.
As with other challenges of parenthood, the key is communication. Listen to your children, let them know your values and encourage them to talk to you about what's going on in their lives.
