Focus of the month
July, 2009: Ideas for Low Cost Family Fun
In these challenging economic times, many of us are looking for ways
to cut back on expenses. Below are some suggestions for family fun on a
budget:
Libraries
Books, magazines, newspapers, CD’s, DVD’s and computers for internet
use are all available at the public library. Some libraries also feature
story times for smaller children, with activities included. All are free
and can save you the cost of purchasing these items.
Family night
Set aside an hour or two, one night of the week. Have dinner
together, and plan to watch a movie, play games, or do an art project.
Everyone in the family can contribute by suggesting their ideas.
Spending time together can create family closeness and encourage
conversation outside the stresses of everyday life.
Get out
Your local community has free or low-cost activities available to
both children and adults. Many times, special educational or
recreational programs are available. Mental stimulation and/or physical
activity can change your mood, and spending time as a family can create
closeness. Check your newspaper or call the following sites in your
community for more information.
- County Parks
- Swimming Pools
- Nature Centers
- Playgrounds
- Bike and Hiking Trails
- Sledding Hills and Skating Rinks
- Skateboard Parks
Music and concerts
Many communities have free concerts and music throughout the year at
community centers or in the parks. Check your local newspaper or the
internet to see what’s available.
Museums and zoos
Museums and zoos often feature a free day either weekly or monthly
with no admission fee. Most have activities for children as well as
adults. Pack lunch, snacks and beverages for a low-cost day.
Think outside the box
Check your newspaper or the Internet for other low-cost or free
activities available in your community. Plan a ‘staycation’ (vacation at
home) by trying something new. It’s good for the soul!
