Assessment, Referral, and Problem Resolution

Caring support from dedicated professionals

Employees face a variety of personal and family concerns that may affect their ability to perform optimally on the job. Some of the more obvious may be severe depression, an alcohol or drug addiction, or conflicts with co-workers, but there are many less visible obstacles to peak performance . . . a fight with a spouse, a family member diagnosed with cancer, an adolescent using alcohol or drugs, a parent in declining health, or low-grade depression, anxiety, or stress.

Often employees don't want to discuss their “personal problems” at work, especially with their supervisor. The only outward symptoms may be lowered productivity or quality of work, increased tardiness, sick days or absences. If left unresolved, performance problems usually deteriorate, resulting in higher medical claims, more on- and off-the-job accidents, inability to meet job standards, and eventual termination and loss of a valuable employee.

The Aurora Employee Assistance Program can prevent such scenarios by providing employees and their family members with a confidential resource for resolving personal and family concerns early, before they become crises that affect health, morale and job performance. Help begins with a confidential phone call. Our EAP specialists listen to the employee's concerns and ask relevant questions to identify the most appropriate action. Based on the nature and urgency of the employee's needs, the EAP will:

  • Immediately connect the employee with a professional EAP counselor
  • Schedule a consultation, either in-person or by telephone
  • Link the employee with a specialist in one of our EAP Work-Life Services (Child Care, Elder Care, Financial or Legal Consultation)
  • Link the employee to an appropriate community resource

If a telephone or in-person consultation is indicated, the EAP assessment counselor may offer a variety of suggestions, such as referral to a support group, community resource or counseling. Sometimes the assessment counselor's suggestions may be all that is needed for concerns that can be readily resolved.

If the issues are more complex, the EAP Short-Term Problem Resolution model offers an additional five to seven consultations with a professional counselor. The focus is on a preventive, motivational approach that offers support, problem solving and assistance in working through transitions.

The Aurora EAP can be a lifeline for employees facing stressful situations . . . and a money-saver for your company.

“I was going to resign my position the day I went in to see the EAP counselor. Through the EAP I was able to create an approach, take some leave – and now am happy in a different position within the organization. Things are good.”
