Offering leading cancer care close to home

Luci FaytleLuci Faytle first came in contact with Sailaja Kamaraju, MD after a trip to a hospital emergency department revealed she had a tumor in her lungs. That afternoon, Luci's life would turn upside down.

Now one year later, she credits Dr. Kamaraju, a board-certified oncologist and hematologist, with helping her right the ship.

“I gave myself a brief moment to feel sorry, then faced the news of my cancer diagnosis head on. Sure it was scary,” says Luci. “I lost both my parents to cancer, but Dr. Kamaraju was just the right partner to help me see that there were options.”

Luci's diagnosis came at a time when the media was filled with statistics about low survival rates for lung cancer patients following the deaths of Peter Jennings and Dana Reeves. Dr. Kamaraju assured Luci that she would do everything possible to give her the best chance of beating the odds. Fortunately, Dr. Kamaraju was able to provide the cancer care services she needed right in her community.

“I never imagined how important it would be to have leading cancer services close to home,” says Luci.

Throughout her course of care, other members of the family were able to go to work, run errands and deal with normal daily life between dropping her off for appointments and picking her up.

“If I had to travel into Milwaukee for every appointment, I would have done it,” Luci says. “But once I knew what to expect, I didn't need my family by my side for every appointment. It was nice that they could drop me off and still keep a relatively routine schedule.”

Dr. Sailaja KamarajuDr. Kamaraju sees patients at the Aurora Women's Pavilion of Aurora West Allis Medical Center and the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic in Oconomowoc. A fellowship-trained cancer specialist, Dr. Kamaraju provides the most up-to-date, state-of-the-art hematology and oncology services available. In addition to comprehensive cancer care, she has a special interest in the treatment of breast cancer and gynecological cancers.

“I believe the convenience of having a vast majority of cancer services right in my patients' community is one of the greatest advantages of the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic,” says Dr. Kamaraju. “Cancer, for at least a brief time, can be demanding on an individual's schedule. There are enough changes in a person's life upon receiving a cancer diagnosis. They should be able to sleep in their own bed, work if they are feeling up to it, and be surrounded by their family and support system. By offering services like chemotherapy in the community, the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic will give patients a chance to maintain a routine lifestyle during cancer treatment.”
