Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT)

Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) is a specialized intensive radiation treatment administered at the time of surgery to a specific tumor or affected area. This single treatment allows the radiation to be directed away from normal structures that may receive a high dose during conventional external beam radiation treatment. An example could include a tumor, which is unresectable from critical normal tissue or surrounding tissue, which may contain microscopic cancer cells.

IORT may be used with cancers of the head and neck, abdomen, pelvis and extremities. IORT may even preserve organ functionality.
