History of the Vince Lombardi Cancer ClinicThe Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic was established at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee in 1989. Named after the legendary Green Bay Packers coach who lost his life to cancer, the clinic was founded to serve patients and families with the level of passion and quest for excellence that were synonymous with Lombardi teams. Since then, the services, resources and philosophy of care of the original Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic have been extended to benefit patients beyond the greater Milwaukee area. Oncology care was established at the Manitowoc Clinic in 1975 under the direction of medical oncologist Edward Barylak, M.D. Affiliation with ECOG (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group), an international cancer research organization, was established in 1982. A second medical oncologist, Andrew Yetter, M.D., joined the practice in 1997. In March of 1998 the center was renames and dedicated as a Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic. Radiation Oncology was added to the clinic when they moved to a new state-of-the-art facility in 2006. The clinic is easily accessible and provides a warm atmosphere for patients to see their doctors and receive advanced diagnostic tests and treatments, including chemotherapy on an outpatient basis. If certain tests or procedures need to be done at another facility, all arrangements will be carefully coordinated by the clinic staff. When hospitalization is needed, every effort will be made to coordinate it through your primary care physician and Aurora Medical Center Manitowoc County. Community outreachResearch has shown that patients who take an active interest in their health care can have a more positive effect on their outcomes. Our community outreach efforts focus on educating people in Manitowoc County about the facts that increase their risk of developing cancer, identifying ways to reduce their risk, and emphasizing the importance of early detection. Resource libraryOur resource library helps patients and families search for and obtain the information they need to make informed decisions about cancer prevention, early detection and treatment. The library offers computer access along with an extensive array of the latest videos, books and pamphlets that can be checked out by patients and their families. Cancer specialists who staff the hotline put callers in touch with accurate answers to a variety of cancer questions ranging from prevention and detection concerns to how to access the latest treatments, research findings, clinical trials and area support groups. The hotline is answered 24 hours per day, seven days per week. SupportVince Lombardi Cancer Clinic connects patients with counselors, social workers and chaplains, and arranges for home care and hospice services, if needed. In addition, a variety of cancer support groups for patients and families are offered through the clinic and in the Manitowoc County area.
