Vaginal cancer

Prevention & detection | Diagnostics & staging | Treatments | Our team | For physicians | Vaginal cancer home | Gynecologic cancer home

The vagina is the birth canal, a tube connecting the cervix at the bottom of the uterus to the outside of the body. Vaginal cancer occurs when cells divide and grow abnormally and cause tissue damage.

Aurora features specialized gynecologic oncologists at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center, the Aurora Women's Pavilion at Aurora West Allis Medical Center and Aurora BayCare Medical Center who offer the most treatments for gynecologic cancer in Wisconsin.

Aurora physicians were the first in Wisconsin to perform robotic-assisted gynecologic surgery. And as principal investigators with the national Gynecologic Oncology Group, they make the latest cancer treatments available to patients through clinical trials.

Types of vaginal cancer

  • Squamous cell carcinoma – The great majority of vaginal cancers are squamous cell carcinomas that first form on the top layer of the vaginal lining.
  • Adenocarcinoma – Adenocarcinomas develop in glandular cells that produce vaginal fluids.
  • Malignant melanoma – A form of skin cancer that usually affects the outer or lower part of the vagina.
  • Sarcoma – A form of cancer that forms deep within the vaginal wall.
