It has been said that nearly every American man will develop prostate
cancer at some point in their lifetime, it they live long enough. It is the
most common cancer in American men.
The prostate gland is about the size of a walnut and sits just below the
bladder in the male body. For older men, the areas of the prostate around
the urethra (the tube that transports urine) continue to grow. This
additional growth causes benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) resulting in
urinating problems. BPH is not cancer, but may cause problems with urinating
like trouble starting and stopping flow. When prostate cancer occurs,
abnormal cells develop in the prostate and may then spread to other parts of
the body, if left untreated.
Aurora Health Care offers you a comprehensive prostate cancer program,
which includes a prostate cancer program coordinator on staff to help guide
you through your testing and treatment. Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center is
also home to the most experienced robotic surgery program in the state of
Wisconsin, a minimally invasive procedure that offers less nerve damage and
quicker recoveries.
Another advantage of the Aurora prostate cancer program is that patients
have access to the highest level of cancer care, including the latest
technologies and techniques, but can receive additional treatments such as
radiation therapy and chemotherapy at a Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic closer
to home. In fact, there are more than a dozen Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinics
in eastern Wisconsin, stretching as far north as Marinette and as far south
as Kenosha.
The professionals at Aurora's Cancer Counseling Center understand that
the medical aspect of cancer is only part of the impact. While medical
expertise is essential, our counselors realize that professional support to
help you cope with the emotional aspect is invaluable as well.
Through a variety of screenings, the Cancer Genetics Counseling Program
can help you learn if you or a family member is at high risk of developing
cancer. By taking into consideration personal and family medical histories,
a physician can identify patients and their families who would benefit from
meeting with a genetic counselor for a hereditary cancer risk assessment.
