Aortic aneurysmThe aorta is the largest artery in the body. From the heart, it branches off to supply oxygen-rich blood to the neck, major organs and arms and legs. An aneurysm is a bulging, ballooning or stretching of the aorta. It is most often seen in men over the age of 40. An aortic aneurysm, or abdominal aortic aneurysm, can be a very serious condition, although the exact cause is unknown. A weakness in the artery wall, present at birth, may be a factor. Infection, high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) may be other risk factors. An aortic aneurysm typically develops over years, but in rare cases, trauma to the abdomen may cause the condition. [ Previous page ]
