Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy is a disorder of the heart muscle itself (rather than of its arteries in coronary artery disease, for example). There are several types of cardiomyopathy and they may result in inadequate blood flow to the body because the heart is not pumping properly. While the cause of some cardiomyopathies are unknown (idiopathic), others may be caused by heart attack (ischemic), alcoholism (alcoholic), pregnancy (peripartum) or other factors.

Some types of cardiomyopathy are characterized by an overly large heart chamber and/or run in families. Heart failure sometimes results from cardiomyopathy.
