EndocarditisThis condition involves inflammation of the inside lining of the heart, heart muscle and/or heart valves. Heart valve disease or a congenital heart defect are typically present in people with endocarditis. Sometimes the cause of the condition is unknown, but infection by bacteria or fungi is the usual cause. Risk factors include intravenous drug use, a history of rheumatic fever, previous surgery to a heart valve or recent dental surgery. Sometimes patients with valve disease will be given antibiotics prior to certain types of surgeries to help prevent endocarditis. [ Previous page ]
