Heart attackA heart attack, or myocardial infarction, occurs when blood flow to part of the heart is suddenly stopped or greatly reduced, usually due to coronary artery disease or a blood clot. Coronary artery disease is caused by atherosclerosis (hardening or narrowing of the arteries) from a build-up of fatty deposits, cholesterol and plaque present in the bloodstream. When blood flow to the heart is interrupted, permanent heart damage often results. [ Previous page ]
