High blood pressure/hypertensionBlood pressure is the amount of force pushing against the walls of arteries as blood flows through the body. It is expressed as 2 numbers, such as "120 over 80." The upper (systolic) number is taken during a heartbeat when the heart contracts, and the lower (diastolic) number is taken when the heart is resting. The ideal blood pressure for adults is 120/80. A person is considered to have high blood pressure if the upper number is 140 or higher or if the lower number is 90 or greater. [ Previous page ]
