On April 9, St. Lukes Medical Center aired footage of an actual angioplasty
procedure. Angioplasty is a process in which a catheter is used to place a
special balloon inside a blocked artery to open the vessel.
What is extraordinary about procedures like this one is that this month, St.
Lukes became the only hospital in the country offering patients cardiac
catheterization by an on-site interventional cardiologist and cath lab team 24
hours a day, 7 days a week.
With 24 hour a day cath lab coverage by both physicians and staff, we are
able to service our patients much better. We have minimal delay and minimal
response time when a patient comes into St. Lukes because we are here on site
all the time, says Joe Glowacki, Director of St. Lukes cath lab. Patients can
expect the same expedient service in the middle of the night a they receive
during the day, he adds.
During a heart attack, the quicker we can open a patients blocked artery,
the better our chance of minimizing permanent heart damage, says Matthew Mick,
MD, a cardiologist at St. Lukes. Having doctors and staff in the cath lab
continuously is just one more example of the commitment we have to providing the
best possible heart care for our patients.
