Cath lab
On April 9, St. Lukes Medical Center aired footage of an actual angioplasty
procedure. Angioplasty is a process in which a catheter is used to place a
special balloon inside a blocked artery to bring back normal blood flow.
Cryoablation On March 18, Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center aired actual
footage of a cryoablation procedure done to correct the heart rhythm disorder of
a 46 year old woman. St. Luke's was the first hospital in Wisconsin to perform
this new procedure.
Myocardial
biopsy On March 11, Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center aired actual footage of a myocardial
biopsy performed on a 50 year-old man. At St. Luke's, this procedure is done as
a matter of routine to monitor the progress of patients who have undergone a
heart transplant. To date, St. Luke's has performed over 500 heart transplants
and currently maintains the best one-year heart transplant survival rate in the
country among large volume institutions.
Ventricular assist devices
On March 4, Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center aired actual
footage of a Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) being implanted into a 49-year old
woman with heart failure. Available for the last decade, VADs are designed to
keep people alive while awaiting a heart transplant. St. Luke's performs more
VAD procedures than any other Wisconsin hospital.
3-Dimensional Imaging and Electrophysiology Mapping
On February 26, St. Lukes Medical Center aired actual footage of a
cryoablation procedure done to correct an irregular heartbeat. This procedure
was performed by Dr. Jasbir Sra, a world-renowned electrophysiology expert who
has revolutionized 3-D mapping for use in pinpointing irregular heartbeats. He
has trained physicians around the world in the use of this groundbreaking
technology.
Cryoplasty On February 12, Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center aired
actual footage of a brand new procedure called cryoplasty, a treatment that
is showing much promise for the clearing of blocked arteries. St. Luke's is
the only hospital in Wisconsin to perform this FDA-approved procedure.
Drug-eluting stents On
February 5, Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center aired footage of an actual drug-eluting
stent procedure. This treatment has helped cut the need for a second heart
procedure by more than half for many patients with blocked arteries.
Coronary Bypass Graft
On January 29, Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center aired footage of an actual
coronary bypass graft surgery. This treatment is expected to restore the
70-year-old man's normal heart function and likely add years to his life.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair
On January 22, Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center aired footage of an actual abdominal
aortic aneurysm repair utilizing a stent graft procedure. This treatment is
expected to help the 77-year-old grandfather of 7 return home sooner than with
conventional surgery. |
