Heart transplant

When a heart is severely diseased or damaged and there are no other options for survival, a heart transplant may be performed. Candidates for heart transplant may have congestive heart failure, or heart failure caused by thickening of the heart walls (cardiomyopathy), coronary artery disease, valve disease, congenital heart disease/defects, heart rhythm disorders or arrhythmia. However, heart transplant surgery is not recommended for many people who also have other serious medical problems.
