Vascular Center:  Treatments

The Vascular Center at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee offers many treatments for diseases of veins and arteries, including some that are not available elsewhere in Wisconsin.

Medical management

A complete review of your vascular system can help prevent a heart attack or stroke from occurring. Often medications such as blood thinning agents can help reduce this risk. Within our Center, our experts provide access to the latest drug treatment options as well as provide risk factor modification programs on an individual basis. Risk factor modifications plans may include the implementation of a regular walking program to help blood flow through the legs as sufficiently as possible.

Minimally invasive procedures

Some of the most advanced treatments performed here are endovascular interventions to restore blood flow and save a patient's life or limb. These treatments are often minimally invasive.

Instead of a large surgical incision, endovascular treatments may utilize tiny flexible tubes (catheters). The catheters are inserted into an artery through a tiny incision and navigated to the blocked area. There, they can dispense medicine, such as blood thinners or clot busters, install a stent that holds open the artery or vein so blood can continue to flow, or other treatment measures.

Endovascular treatments at St. Luke's vascular center include:

  • Stent graft repair for abdominal aortic aneurysm [ see video of this procedure ]
  • Angioplasty in the arteries of the arms, legs or kidneys
  • Thrombolytic therapy
  • Carotid artery stenting
  • Surgical interventions

Surgery

Surgical options are available at the Vascular Center at St. Luke's and are performed by experienced, board certified surgeons for the treatment of vascular disease. Consultation with a vascular specialist is always recommended to determine your best individual treatment options.
