Thoracic Conditions

Surgeons at Aurora Health Care have expertise in caring for many conditions affecting the lungs and chest. Some of these more common conditions include:

  • Evaluation/removal of lung nodules/tumors
  • Removal of lung cancer
  • Drainage/treatment of pleural effusions (fluid next to the lung) most commonly from cancer or heart problems
  • Bronchoscopy - which involves looking in the airways and lungs with a camera to diagnose problems, taking biopsies or cleaning out secretions/tumor
  • Removal of esophageal tumors and treatment of esophageal motility problems/swallowing problems

Signs & Symptoms of Thoracic Conditions

Signs or symptoms of thoracic conditions usually include:

  • shortness of breath
  • cough with or without sputum production
  • coughing up blood
  • pain in the ribs or chest
  • abnormal chest xray
  • swallowing problems

Thoracic conditions are diagnosed with chest xray, chest CT scan and/or biopsy.

Treating Thoracic Conditions

For lung nodules/tumors, surgeons will many times try to remove them for diagnostic/health purposes.

Pleural effusions are drained and if they are persistent then the surgeon may do a treatment to help keep the lung expanded and prevent fluid build up. Fluid samples can also be used for diagnostic purposes.

Your surgeon will give you a detailed description of treatment options for your specific lung/chest condition.
