Enhanced External Counterpulsation
Exploring EECP Therapy
We know that if you’re suffering from chest pain or heart failure, even simple activities can be challenging - walking up a flight of stairs, pushing your grandchild in a stroller, or putting dishes in the dishwasher.
We want to help you breathe easier. Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) is a non-invasive, outpatient treatment that is geared for people with frequent chest pain and heart failure. It is an alternative treatment for patients who don’t qualify for bypass surgery, stents or angioplasty.
EECP helps prevent symptoms of angina (chest pain or discomfort). People who complete the treatment often find their chest pain is gone or less frequent. The treatment can allow you to participate in more physical activities and enjoy a better quality of life.
Aurora is the only place in the Milwaukee area where EECP is offered. To qualify for the treatment, ask your doctor for a referral.

What happens during EECP therapy?
EECP is completed over seven weeks in one-hour sessions. You’ll be able to return right back to your normal day after each appointment.
When you arrive for your appointment, your nurse will check your blood pressure and ask how you’re feeling. During treatment, you’ll lie on a table. Large blood pressure cuffs are wrapped around your calves, thighs and buttocks. These cuffs inflate and deflate, which your nurse will regulate based on your heart rate.
During the treatment, you can talk to your medical team or just fall asleep. EECP won’t cause pain. Because this is a non-invasive approach, you won’t even have to get your blood drawn.
The goal for EECP is to make your blood flow through your heart in a more efficient manner.
