Craniosacral TherapyWhat is Craniosacral Therapy?Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a is a very gentle, non-invasive touch technique based upon the belief that our bodies know how to heal themselves and will given the appropriate assistance. Craniosacral Therapy involves all of the bones of the skull, face and mouth which make up the cranium and extends by a system of hydraulics and membranes to the lower end of the spine or sacrum. The craniosacral system system includes a palpable rhythm or pulse that helps practioners to determine whether or not the body is functioning properly and where there may be areas of pain and dysfunction. By using their palpation skills a CST practitioner can listen to the body and then assist in the release of restrictions. These restrictions are the result of trauma either physical or emotional. Often emotional trauma is stored in our bodies as restrictions and until these emotional traumas are released the body won't heal. Until these stored blocks are released, they can continue to cause pain and may be the cause of additional problems. Trauma may include injuries from:
The craniosacral therapist evaluates the whole body for restrictions, finds the areas of imbalance and works to correct it. As the craniosacral system is closely related to the nervous system, imbalances in the craniosacral system can cause dysfunction in the brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves. I don't feel pain. Why should I consider Craniosacral Therapy?Anyone who regularly deals with stresses of life can benefit from craniosacral therapy. CST will induce a deep state of relaxation which in itself can help balance the mind and body and promote healing. How often will I need therapy?Initially sessions may be once or twice per week. Keep in mind that our bodies are different. Some people may get complete relief after their first session, while others may require additional treatment sessions over the course of several weeks. It may take time for craniosacral therapy to work. Remember, it may have taken you many years to tie yourself into a myofascial knot, to the point where you notice pain and dysfunction. It may not be realistic to expect immediate results. Often the benefits of CST occurs over time and are subtle step by step increments. Clients with chronic conditions may require long-term therapy although the frequency of sessions usually reduces over time. How will I feel during treatment?Nearly everyone feels a deep sense of relaxation. Many people may not notice the subtle changes that are taking place. Still others experience memories, emotions or physical sensations that can often provide them with specific insight and assist them in making positive life changes. How safe is Craniosacral Therapy?Craniosacral Therapy, when practiced by a qualified therapist, it is a very safe method, simply because the amount of pressure used by the therapist is so light. It is a completely non-invasive approach. Contraindicatoins do exist, however, and include: recent skull fractures, cerebral hemorrhage, acute aneurysm, or other bleeding disorders. Will my insurance pay for craniosacral therapy?Unfortunately, health insurance rarely pays for CST. We suggest contacting your insurance carrier. Do I have to undress for this therapy?Clients remain fully clothed during Craniosacral Therapy sessions. How did Craniosacral Therapy originate?Craniosacral Therapy was developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger, D.O., O.M.M. Dr. Upledger based his work on the theories of William Sutherland, an osteopath who discovered intrinsic movements of the bones of a skull in the early 1900s. Dr. Sutherland's insight was that the cranial bones move at the sutures and are not fused as had been (and still often is) taught in medical schools. Dr. Upledger began his research on CST in the 1970s and has since compiled extensive clinical applications. He founded the Upledger Institute in 1982 and has since trained thousands of health care providers in craniosacral therapy. Craniosacral Therapy has been effective in the treatment of:
‘A New Kind of Pulse'Time Magazine selected Dr. Upledger as one of their ten most important innovators of Alternative Medicine for the 21st century in July, 2001. "Craniosacral Therapy works to reverse the debilitating effects of stress by providing the conditions in which the nervous system can rest and rejuvenate. In fact, it's this capacity to reduce stress that's leading an increasing number of people to include CST as a part of their wellness routines." Our CranioSacral Therapist Greg Jolly WMCT CST is certified through the Upledger Institute. All of our massage therapist are certified with the State of Wisconsin. To schedule an appointment:
