What is Chin Implant Surgery?
Chin implant surgery, also known as chin augmentation surgery, can increase the size and projection of your chin. It is often done to create a chin that is more in proportion with the rest of your face. Chin implant surgery will improve the balance of your facial profile and correct a weak, small or recessed chin. Implants can be placed in different regions of the chin and jaw to create a stronger or wider chin or to lengthen your face.
During chin implant surgery, your surgeon will place a biocompatible implant over the existing bone structure of your lower jaw, which will enhance the dimensions of your jaw and improve the balance and proportion of your face.
Why Consider a Chin Implant?
If you are bothered by a small, weak or recessed chin, you may be considering chin implant surgery. Chin implants can improve the balance and proportion of the structure of your face, increasing the projection of your chin and creating a more distinct jaw line.
Advances in technology, such as teleconferencing, are making many people more aware of their appearances and the images they project in the workplace and socially. Chin implant surgery is quickly becoming the No. 1 procedure in U.S. due to teleconferencing and other video-related technology. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, “new statistics show that chin augmentation grew more than breast augmentation, Botox and liposuction combined in 2011. The procedure skyrocketed in both women and men, as well as in all patients over the age of 20, with the largest increase seen in patients age 40 or older – a phenomenon which appears, in part, to be sparked by increased usage of video chat technology, an aging baby boomer population and a desire for success in the workplace.”
Look your best on the job – even on your teleconferences. If you’re concerned about the appearance of your chin or jaw line, consider having chin implant surgery. It may improve your self-image and make you feel more confident in the workplace.
How is Chin Implant Surgery Performed?
Before your chin implant surgery begins, you will be given anesthesia to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Your surgeon will determine the type of anesthesia based on what is best for you.
Chin implant surgeries are relatively simple procedures that usually involve only one small incision that allows your surgeon to place the implant. That incision may be inside your mouth or on your chin, just beneath your jaw line.
Implants are available in a variety of shapes, sizes and materials. Depending on what you’re trying to accomplish with chin implant surgery, your surgeon will choose from a variety of implants. Solid silicone implants are usually placed through a small incision under your chin, and rigid, biocompatible implants are placed through an incision inside your mouth.
Once the implant is placed, your surgeon will secure it and then close the incision with absorbable sutures (stitches). These will need to be removed one to two weeks after surgery.
