What are Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion?

Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion and are two cosmetic procedures with varying results and recovery times. Though both are noninvasive procedures that smooth facial skin to achieve a more youthful appearance, they are quite different. Microdermabrasion only affects the very top layer of the skin, while dermabrasion gets down into deeper layers.

Microdermabrasion is a quick procedure – about 30 minutes to an hour – and it is relatively painless. You probably won’t need any type of anesthesia or pain medication during or after the procedure. It will remove the uppermost layer of your epidermis (the top layer of skin), which is called the stratum corneum. It’s a light treatment that will give your skin a smoother, younger appearance, but it won’t treat deeper wrinkles and scars. After microdermabrasion, you will probably experience some facial redness for a few hours, but you can go back to work and to your normal activities immediately. You may have to return for multiple treatments to experience the results you’re looking to achieve.

Dermabrasion penetrates much deeper into your skin, removing skin down to the layer of collagen (below the epidermis) using a method of surgical scraping. This leaves your skin fully resurfaced. It’s a longer procedure than microdermabrasion, and it will require time to heal – up to 10 days. Unlike microdermabrasion, dermabrasion can successfully treat deeper wrinkles, acne, skin discoloration and scar tissue. It can also remove precancerous growths called keratoses.

Why Consider Dermabrasion or Microdermabrasion?

If you have uneven skin texture or you feel your skin looks dull or blotchy, you may want to try microdermabrasion.

If you’re looking to treat deeper wrinkles, facial lines, scars or other facial imperfections, dermabrasion might work for you.
