What is a brow lift and when is brow surgery needed? Board Certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Jolene Andryk, MD, discusses.

What is a Forehead Lift?

A forehead lift, also known as a brow lift, helps minimize the creases on the forehead and lines on the bridge of the nose. A forehead lift also can reduce the appearance of frown lines, reposition a sagging or low brow or raise the eyebrows.

Why Consider a Forehead Lift?

Many people have forehead lifts because they are bothered by signs of aging or expression lines on their foreheads and because this procedure can create a more youthful appearance. Some things a forehead lift can do are:

  • Minimize the creases that develop across the forehead or the bridge of the nose between the eyes
  • Reposition a low or sagging brow that creates a hood on the upper eyelids
  • Raise eyebrows to create a more youthful, alert appearance
  • Improve the vertical creases that develop between the eyebrows, commonly known as frown lines

How is a Forehead Lift Performed?

Before your forehead lift surgery begins, you will be given anesthesia to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Your surgeon will determine the type of anesthesia based on what is best for you.

There are a number of techniques surgeons use to perform forehead lifts, ranging from traditional/open procedures to endoscopic brow lifts to coronal brow lifts. Your surgeon will evaluate the extent of work necessary and will decide which procedure is best for you.

During the procedure, your surgeon will attempt to hide incision lines within your hair or along the natural contours of your face. If your forehead needs to be shortened, incisions will be placed at the hairline.

After your surgeon has completed the forehead lift procedure, he or she will close the incisions using sutures (stitches), surgical tape, skin adhesives or specially designed clips.
