Learn More About Liposuction at Aurora Health Care

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is a procedure that slims and reshapes the body by removing excess fat deposits from specific areas.

Liposuction can help reduce fat in many areas of the body, including:

  • Ankles
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Buttocks
  • Calves
  • Cheeks
  • Chest
  • Chin
  • Inner knee
  • Thighs
  • Waist

Liposuction may be performed alone, or it can be done in conjunction with other plastic surgery procedures, such as a tummy tuck, breast reduction or facelift.

Why Consider Lposuction?

Some people have localized fat deposits that can cause disproportionate body shape and contours. Some people, despite exercise and a healthy diet and lifestyle, cannot get rid of stubborn fat pockets. Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity. General Overview of Procedure

How is liposuction performed?

Before your liposuction procedure, you will be given medication to keep you comfortable. The choices include IV sedation (often called “twilight” sedation) and general anesthesia. Your surgeon will discuss options with you and make a recommendation about which is best for you.

During the procedure, your surgeon will make small incisions in the area where fat removal will occur. Before removing the fat, your surgeon will infuse the area with a sterile liquid that will help reduce bleeding and trauma to the tissue. Then, your surgeon will insert a thin tube, known as a cannula, into the area to loosen excess fat. Once the fat is dislodged from the tissue, it will be suctioned out of your body in one of two ways – with a syringe or a surgical vacuum that will be attached to the cannula.

Because the incisions are so small, they likely will not require stitches to close them, and you shouldn’t have any noticeable scars.
