What is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure to remove excess fat and skin around the waist. It also may restore weakened muscles or muscles that have separated from the skin. The ultimate goal of a tummy tuck is to create a smoother, firmer abdomen.
Why Consider a Tummy Tuck?
If you’re unhappy about the shape of your abdomen because it’s protruding or loose and sagging, you may benefit from a tummy tuck. Sometimes, despite exercise and a healthy lifestyle, people still have an abdomen that is out of proportion with the rest of the body. That can happen from pregnancy, aging, weight fluctuations, prior surgeries and heredity.
Note: If you’re considering getting pregnant or are planning substantial weight loss, it may be best to postpone your tummy tuck, as the benefits of a tummy tuck can be diminished by significant weight fluctuations or by stretching the abdominal area. You and your surgeon can talk about the best time for a tummy tuck for you.
How is a Tummy Tuck Performed?
Before your abdominoplasty begins, you’ll be given anesthesia to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Your surgeon will determine the type of anesthesia based on what is best for you.
During the procedure, your surgeon will make a horizontal incision between your pubic hairline and your belly button. The length and shape of the incision will be based on the extent of surgical correction necessary.
Your surgeon then will repair any weakened abdominal muscles, and remove excess skin, tissue and fat. If you have excess skin in the upper abdomen, it’s possible that your surgeon will need to make a second incision around your belly button.
After the repair and removal phase, your surgeon will close the incision(s) using sutures (stitches), tapes, skin adhesives or clips.
