The Neuro-Otologic Skull Base Surgery Center

The Neuro-Otologic Skull Base Surgery Center at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center is one of only a few in the country that focuses on a team approach to the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with skull base lesions involving the temporal bone. As a result of the coordination of specialists, advanced diagnostic techniques and innovative surgery procedures, many patients with these lesions are living longer and enjoying an improved quality of life.

The Center utilizes neurotology and neurosurgery in approaching the lateral skull base. The Center is supported by expertise in diagnostic radiology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, ophthalmology, head and neck surgery, and radiation therapy.

brainNeurosurgery involves the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and cerebral vascular circulation.

Neurotology is a specialized field that focuses on treating disorders of the ear and skull base. It is an area of surgery in which a surgeon trained in otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat disorders) has completed additional fellowship training in advanced temporal bone surgery. The surgeons associated with St. Luke's Neuro-Otologic Skull Base Surgery Center are fellowship-trained neurotologists and board-certified otolaryngologists who have special expertise in approaches to the lateral skull base and temporal bone. These techniques include:

  • Translabyrithine
  • Retrolabyrinthine
  • Transtemporal
  • Transortic
  • Middle cranial fossa
  • Infratemporal fossa
  • Retro-sigmoid

The neurosurgeon works as part of the team with the otolaryngology (ENT) surgeon. The neurosurgeon assists with resecting the lesion from the brain and the nerves. They work together as a team to provide comprehensive preoperative, operative, and post-operative care.

Members of St. Luke's Neuro-Otologic Skull Base Surgery Services team are available for consultation 24-hours per day at (888) 635-2266.
