Diagnosis, treatment and recovery

The Neuro-Otologic Skull Base Surgery Center's approach focuses on patient-centered care which involves the patient and the patient's family with each step in the diagnostic, treatment and recover/rehabilitation processes. After an initial consultation and evaluation, specialized studies help the physician develop an individualized treatment and care plan for each patient. Education and support groups are available to enhance the recovery process.

The staff of the Center recognizes that compassionate support and individualized nursing and rehabilitation programs are vital to a patient's successful recovery. Rehabilitation therapists specially trained in skull base disorders work closely with patients to speed their recovery, using highly progressive rehabilitation treatment protocols and state-of-the-art equipment. This may involve hearing, balance, speech and/or swallowing therapy, depending on the nature of the lesion and method of surgical treatment.

Advanced neuroradiological procedures assist in the diagnosis and treatment of skull base lesions. In addition, nerve monitoring techniques involving the intraoperative facial nerve, auditory and lower cranial nerve are the standard of practice at St. Luke's.

A variety of advanced neuroradiolgical procedures offer patients highly progressive treatments. These procedures include:

  • Glomus tumor embolization
  • Neuroendovascular therapy
  • Carotid artery occlusion tests.

St. Luke's is also at the leading edge of evolving diagnostic and assessment technologies such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which allows physicians to map and understand brain function following sound stimulation.
