Regional Neuroendovascular Center

The Regional Neuroendovascular Center brings together the skills and expertise of a truly multi-disciplinary team. From cerebrovascular neurologists, neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons, and neurointensivists to interventional neuroradiologists, physiatrists, and rehabilitation specialists, the Center is committed to compassionate care for patients and on-going research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of neuroendovascular diseases and conditions.

The neuroendovascular team takes a minimally-invasive approach to the treatment of many vascular conditions. Aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, carotid stenosis, tumors of the brain and spine … these and other conditions were previously considered inoperable before our team helped develop the techniques now in use worldwide.

Our endovascular procedures offer new hope to patients, often with improved outcomes, lower risk, faster recovery and lower cost.

Diagnostics

The Regional Neuroendovascular Center is equipped with the latest diagnostic equipment and programs for accurate disease localization and more effective treatment plans. Our essential diagnostic tools include:

  • MRI, including diffusion-weighted imaging (DW-MRI) and perfusion array
  • Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA)
  • Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS)
  • Diamox single-proton emission computed tomography (SPECT)
  • High-resolution CT angiography
  • CT perfusion imaging
  • Carotid ultrasound
  • Transcranial Doppler (TCD)
  • Intracranial pressure and cerebral blood-flow monitoring
  • Functional MRI
  • Noninvasive embolus detection
  • Diagnostic and interventional angiography

Procedures performed

Cerebrovascular ischemia

  • Intracranial angioplasty
  • Secondary prevention – carotid and vertebral artery stenting
  • Tertiary prevention – intra-arterial thrombolysis within 6 hours for anterior circulation and within 12 hours for posterior circulation clots

Aneurysms

  • GDC coil
  • Permanent balloon occlusion for giant cavernous aneurysms
  • Combination of stent and coil technique where indicated
  • Intra-operative angiography

Vasospasms

  • Balloon angioplasty for proximal vasospasm
  • Papaverine infusion for distal vasospasm

AVMs

  • Intra-operative angiography
  • Embolization for preoperative or permanent occlusion
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery using Gamma Knife

Carotid-Cavernous Fistula (CCF)

  • Balloon occlusion with detachable balloons
  • Coils, arterial or venous approach

Head and neck tumors

  • Functional testing
  • WADA test
  • Petrosal sinus sampling
  • Temporary balloon occlusion testing

Intra-operative angiography

  • Protocols in development for superselective intra-arterial chemotherapy
  • Spinal arteriovenous malformation

Stroke treatment

  • Clinical trials of new stroke therapies administered as soon as possible after a stroke
  • Carotid endarterectomy
  • Interventional neuroradiologic techniques (including angioplasty and stent placement)
  • Microvascular neurosurgery
  • Comprehensive rehabilitation services for the entire spectrum of ischemic and hemorrhagic cerebrovascular disorders
