Radiofrequency ablation

Radiofrequency ablation is used to destroy the nerves that supply the facet joints in the spine. These joints are the small posterior joints on either side of the spine and can sometimes be a source of back pain. Radiofrequency nerve ablation uses radio waves to produce heat. By generating heat around a nerve, the nerve's ability to transmit pain is destroyed. It can be used to treat all types of pain, ranging from chronic neck pain to low back pain.

Injection therapies

Spinal injections can serve 2 purposes – relieve pain and serve as a diagnostic tool to help doctors determine the cause of the pain. Two types of spinal injections are:

Facet Joint Injections help to reduce inflammation and pain originating from one or more facet joints. These joints are located at the back of the spine and are important to movement.

Epidural Steroid Injections administer pain-relieving medications into the epidural spaces. The medicine coats the nerve roots and the outside lining of the facet joints.

Percutaneous disc decompression

Percutaneous Disc Decompression is often used in the treatment of contained herniated discs and is a minimally invasive procedure. A needle emitting radio waves is used to dissolve excess tissue, reducing the pressure inside the disc and the nerves. The reduction of excess pressure helps alleviate the pain.

Spinal cord stimulation

Spinal cord stimulation is a therapy where electrical impulses are used to block pain from being perceived in the brain. Instead of pain, you feel a mild, tingling sensation. An implanted lead (a flexible, insulated wire), which is powered by an implanted battery or receiver, is placed near your spinal cord. This lead and an implanted stimulator send electrical impulses that block the pain messages to your brain.

Complementary medicine

Acupuncture
Acupunture is a proven, safe and legitimate form of treatment therapy when administered by a qualified practitioner. It is not only useful for pain management but can be part of a comprehensive preventive health care and health maintenance plan. Lower back pain is one of the common ailments that can be relieved by the use of this specialty practice.

Massage therapy
Therapeutic massage and therapeutic touch are used as complements to traditional types of health care. Therapeutic massage can enhance physical therapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic and psychotherapy. It can assist in temporary or long-term relief of the impact that physical and emotional challenges have on your body.
