Medication Disposal at Aurora Pharmacy

Aurora Pharmacy Offers Tips on Medication Disposal

Medication disposal

Pharmacies are prohibited by the federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) from accepting unused, unneeded or expired prescription drugs, so Aurora Pharmacy cannot accept a return of your prescriptions.

However, there are some ways to responsibly dispose of your medications once you don’t need them anymore.

The Office of National Drug Control policy and SmartRXDisposal.net offer these suggestions for safe prescription disposal:

DO:

  • Take advantage of community pharmaceutical take-back programs. There are programs that allow the public to bring unused drugs to a central location for proper disposal. Your local health department may know if there are upcoming programs in your area. Aurora Health Care offers them from time to time, so check in with them to find out what, if anything, they are offering. Some communities also have pharmaceutical take-back programs or community solid-waste programs that allow the public to bring unused drugs to a central location for proper disposal. Where these programs exist, they are a good way to dispose of unused pharmaceuticals safely and responsibly.
  • Take precautions when disposing of drugs. Take unused, unneeded or expired prescription drugs out of their original containers and throw them in the trash. Mixing prescription drugs with an undesirable substance, such as used coffee grounds or kitty litter, and putting them in impermeable, non-descript containers, such as empty cans or sealable bags, will further ensure the drugs are not diverted.

DO NOT:

  • Do not flush or pour unused medications down a sink, drain or toilet. Please note that while the rule of thumb is not to flush, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that certain medications should be flushed due to their abuse potential. Read the instructions on your medication and talk to your pharmacist for more information.
