Aurora Health Care's board-certified procedural dermatologist, P. Kim Phillips, MD, explains why Aurora is the best choice for laser skin treatments.

What Is Laser Skin Treatment?

Laser skin treatment is a procedure used to treat many types of skin conditions including: wrinkles, brown spots, unwanted hair, scars, stretch marks, acne scars and much more. This advanced treatment can be done in an outpatient setting because the lasers only affect the part of the skin that the patient wants to be treated.

How Does It Work?

There are three layers of skin: the epidermis, dermis and fat. The epidermis is the outer most layer of the skin. The dermis is underneath the epidermis and the fat is located underneath the dermis. Different lasers emit different wavelengths, or doses of light, and this allows the laser to touch the layer of the skin that needs to be treated without affecting parts of the skin that need not be treated.

Conditions Treated by Laser Skin Treatment

Laser skin treatments can treat many different skin conditions such as redness, brown spots, stretch marks, scars, wrinkles, fine lines and more. Others include:

  • Hair removal
  • Facial veins
  • Port wine stain
  • Hemangioma
  • Venous lake
  • Poikiloderma
  • Sun damage
  • Acne scars
  • Fine lines

Laser Skin Treatment Recovery

Some laser skin operations require more than one laser treatment for optimal results. Therefore, each laser skin treatment aims to gradually improve the skin condition instead of trying to improve it with one, powerful treatment. Because the treatments are spaced out over time, the recovery time after each treatment is minimal. For example, after a laser hair removal treatment, a patient may experience swelling or red bumps in the treatment area for 12 to 24 hours after treatment.

Is This Treatment Covered by Insurance?

Most patients undergo this type of treatment for purely cosmetic reasons; however some medical conditions may require laser skin treatment and would be covered by insurance.
