What is Burn Injury Surgery?
How is the Procedure Performed?
Surgery to correct burn injuries will vary from patient to patient and may involve different surgical techniques depending on the severity of the burn injury. If you have questions about how your burn injury surgery will be performed, contact a board certified reconstructive plastic surgeon at Aurora Health Care for a consultation.
In most cases, you will be given anesthesia to keep you from feeling pain during the procedure. Your surgeon will recommend either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.
The actual type of procedure will vary depending on the severity of the burn injury and the extent of the skin area to be treated. One of the most common types of burn injury surgery is a skin graft. During a skin graft procedure, healthy tissue will be removed from one area of your body and transplanted to the area being treated after a burn. There are two types of skin grafts: split-thickness grafts (transplanting only a few layers of the outer skin) and full-thickness grafts (transplanting the entire bottom layer of skin).
