Driver Readiness Program

The Aurora Rehabilitation Centers provide a comprehensive driver's readiness evaluation. We offer state-of-the-art equipment to provide the most accurate analysis of a client's driving potential. Driving can mean the difference between independence and relying on others. The normal aging process or a disability can limit a person's ability to drive and, therefore, affect their quality of life and independence.

We want to support and help you maintain your independence. We have occupational therapists with additional training in the field of driver rehabilitation who will provide recommendations on safe driving.

Common diagnoses for referral

• Older adults
• Cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer's disease or dementia
• Amputee
• Neurological disorders such as stroke, multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease
• Traumatic brain injury
• Orthopedic conditions such as joint replacement or degenerative joint disease
• Visual deficits from cataracts, glaucoma, etc. (see photos)

Anyone can refer a client to our program; however, a physician order is required prior to evaluation. The cost of the program is $150 at the time of service and is not usually covered by insurance.

The clinical evaluation will take approximately 1.5 hours to complete and will cover the following areas:

• General strength and movement
• Cognitive abilities
• Attention
• Reaction time
• Coordination
• Vision/perception

A complete written assessment with recommendations will be provided to the physician. The occupational therapist will provide general information about driver readiness, alternatives to driving and appropriateness of a behind-the-wheel assessment.
