Osteoporosis program

One of the most significant consequences of osteoporosis is fractures. Each year the disease leads to 1.5 million fractures of the vertebra, hip, wrist, pelvis and rib. Fractures can lead to lost mobility, other medical complications and even death. Prevention of fractures is the key to maintaining quality of life in people diagnosed with osteoporosis.

Our osteoporosis education program emphasizes fracture prevention and the development of an individualized osteoporosis exercise program. This can be an effective method in reducing the consequences of the disease.

Experienced staff

Aurora Rehabilitation Center's/Aurora Sports Medicine Institute's Osteoporosis Program is staffed by physical and occupational therapists specially trained in the principles of osteoporosis exercise and education.

Individualized treatment

To develop an appropriate and individualized plan of care, the therapists assess the following:

  • Medical history
  • Exercise history
  • Balance assessment
  • History of fractures
  • Strength testing
  • ROM/flexibility resting
  • Functional limitations
  • Posture assessment
  • Patient goals
  • Results of relevant diagnostic testing (bone density, X-rays)
  • Assessing knowledge of proper body mechanics
