Voice Clinic

Most people depend on their voice as their primary source of communication. When complications arise, it limits a person's ability to express themselves as freely as before. The Voice Clinic of Aurora Health Care is here to help.

Individualized treatment

We provide care for a variety of voice disorders which may result from:

  • Misuse, overuse or abuse of voice (hyperfunction)
  • Hoarseness lasting one month (dysphonia)
  • Vocal fold paralysis
  • Laryngeal cancer
  • Parkinson's disease

Comprehensive care provided

Voice evaluation consists of:

  • A complete voice medical history
  • Perceptual and acoustic measures of vocal quality, pitch, loudness and resonance
  • Videostraboscopic examination of larynx – where an otolaryngologist (ENT) and speech language pathologist (SLP) explore for pathology or disease and examine the physiology or movement patterns of vocal cord vibrations. Upon completion of the exam, the ENT and SLP collaborate and determine appropriate treatment including medical management (medications, surgery) or voice treatment.

Voice treatment available at the clinics consists of 5 components:

  • Vocal hygiene program (education and prevention)
  • Massage
  • Counseling
  • Voice treatment
  • Community fitness exercise

Referrals to other medical disciplines are made as necessary:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Allergy
  • Pulmonary
  • Respiratory therapy
