da Vinci Hysterectomy: Changing the experience of gynecologic surgery

Aurora St. Luke's offers a new, minimally invasive surgical procedure for gynecologic cancer patients.

Hysterectomy may be performed to treat several conditions including uterine disease, uterine fibroids, endometriosis and gynecologic cancers. Traditional hysterectomy can sometimes be performed vaginally, but when the uterus is enlarged, usually requires abdominal surgery. This open surgery can require a large incision across the abdomen, which results in a lengthy recovery and increased risk or bleeding and infection.

For eligible patients, the da Vinci surgical system can offer numerous benefits over traditional open surgery, including:

  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Less pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Quicker return to normal activities
  • Less blood loss and less risk of infection
  • Less scarring

The state leader in experience

Dr. Peter Johnson, a board-certified, fellowship-trained physician, was the first in Wisconsin to perform gynecologic surgery using the da Vinci® Surgical System, and has performed the most robotic-assisted gynecologic procedures in the state. That kind of experience in unmatched anywhere else in the state.

How does it work?

The state-of-the-art da Vinci Surgical System is designed to help your surgeon perform a more precise, minimally invasive procedure. Several small incisions are made along the abdomen, and tiny surgical tools are inserted into the incisions. Your surgeon then controls these instruments allowing more accuracy and a less invasive procedure. The da Vinci system cannot be programmed nor can it make decisions on it's own, requiring every maneuver be performed by a highly skilled physician.
